How Telugu callers talk

Telugu calls mix English in almost every sentence.

Telugu callers drop English into nearly every sentence: “appointment confirm చేయాలా?”, “payment pending ఉంది”. Valmiki STT writes that mix down as it is said, without being told the language first, and Pāṇini TTS reads Telugu script and English words in one voice.

Regional speech differs. Telangana Telugu, around Hyderabad, carries many Urdu and Hindi words and its own forms (ఎట్లున్నరు for “how are you”), while coastal Andhra speech is closer to the written standard (ఎలా ఉన్నారు) and Rayalaseema has its own accent. Hyderabad callers may also switch into Dakhni, the local Hindi-Urdu.

Politeness is carried by the respectful plural, మీరు, and by అండి at the end of a sentence. A business call should use both; an agent that drops అండి sounds abrupt to many callers.

Numbers, dates and times

Times in English words, dates and amounts in Telugu.

Many Telugu speakers say clock times in English even in an all-Telugu sentence (ten thirty కి), and we recommend agents do the same: it is how callers talk, and long Telugu time phrases are where speech most often goes wrong. Dates and amounts work well in Telugu: రూపాయలు, వేలు, లక్షలు and కోట్లు, so ₹12,500 is పన్నెండు వేల ఐదు వందల రూపాయలు.

Make sure the agent's instructions say what రేపు (tomorrow) and ఎల్లుండి (the day after tomorrow) are as dates, so it never guesses. OTPs, phone numbers and booking IDs should be read one digit at a time.

What the calling rules ask of an AI agent.

An opening line that says so

నమస్కారం అండి, ఇది [కంపెనీ] తరఫున AI assistant కాల్, ఈ కాల్ రికార్డ్ అవుతోంది.

Hello, this is an AI assistant calling for [company], and this call is being recorded.

AI calling is legal in India, and the rules for business calls apply to an AI agent as they do to a person. TRAI now treats every call dialled by software, AI agents included, as an A2P call: from 27 November 2026 the business must declare these calls, and the numbers it calls from, to its telecom operator in advance. Promotional calls must come from 140 numbers, and service calls from banks, insurers and other regulated firms from the 1600 series. Read TRAI's rules on robocalls and commercial calls and TRAI's 140, 1600 and 1601 number series.

For overdue loans, the RBI's recovery directions apply from 1 January 2027: calls only between 08:00 and 19:00, every recovery call recorded and kept for six months, and the debt discussed only with the borrower or guarantor. They do not mention AI, so hold an AI agent to the same standard as a person. See RBI's recovery rules for calls.
