English to Tamil voice translation is usually for a message someone will hear rather than read: a parcel update, a hospital reminder, a call to family. Because written and spoken Tamil differ so much, the spoken form is what makes the audio sound natural.

Tamil is one of the clearest cases of a language written one way and spoken another. Written Tamil (எழுத்துத் தமிழ்) says இன்று, வருகிறேன் and நீங்கள்; spoken Tamil (பேச்சுத் தமிழ்) says இன்னைக்கு, வர்றேன் and நீங்க. Read aloud, the written form sounds like a news bulletin, not like a person on the phone.
Vyas is asked for spoken Tamil in Tamil script, with the English words Tamil speakers use every day, such as parcel, appointment and busy, written in Tamil letters. If the audio is for a formal announcement, you can switch the words back to the written forms in the translation box before you play it.
Tamil first-person verbs end the same way for anyone: வர்றேன் (I am coming) and பார்த்தேன் (I saw) do not change for a man or a woman, so most translations suit every voice as they are. Gender shows in the third person (வந்தான், வந்தாள்); the respectful வந்தாங்க avoids it when the text talks about someone else.

How it works
Vyas, the Sonex Labs language model, turns your English into everyday spoken Tamil, and is asked to write numbers and times as words so they are read naturally and to keep the speaker's gender unmarked, so any voice can read the result. The same model is available through an OpenAI-compatible API.
Pāṇini, the Sonex Labs text-to-speech model, reads the Tamil translation live in the voice you pick; nothing on this page is pre-recorded. To turn longer Tamil scripts into audio, or to hear more Tamil voices, use the Tamil text-to-speech page.
FAQ
Yes, on this page. Translate up to 220 characters of English at a time and play the Tamil result, with no account; very heavy use from one connection is asked to sign up. Signing up is free and gives 10,000 text-to-speech characters and one voice clone, no card required. To build translation into your own app, Vyas costs $0.30 per million input tokens and $0.60 per million output tokens. Pāṇini costs $0.03125 per 1,000 characters, the same rate for every language.
Yes, once you sign up (free). The player on this page plays audio in the browser only. After sign-up, the API returns Tamil audio as MP3 when you set "output_format": "mp3", and the dashboard saves each clip as a WAV file.
Not yet. The translator takes typed or pasted text only, up to 220 characters at a time.
Vyas is suited to short, everyday sentences like the samples on this page, but its translation quality has not been measured on a public benchmark, and like any machine translation it can get names, idioms and tone wrong. The translation box is editable, so fix anything before you play it, and have a native Tamil speaker check anything medical, legal or financial.
The player offers three voices, starting with Kavya, a native Tamil voice. Any Sonex Labs voice can read Tamil and keeps its own accent. After sign-up you can also clone a voice from a 10-second recording and use it for Tamil.
