Samples
Arabic to Urdu matters for the many Urdu speakers who live and work in the Gulf and get messages from hospitals, employers and shops in Arabic. Urdu borrowed a great deal of vocabulary from Arabic, so words such as وقت, شکریہ and انتظار carry across, but the grammar and the everyday phrasing have to change.

Register
Urdu shares its everyday spoken base with Hindi, and its formal register draws on Persian and Arabic: a notice says براہِ کرم انتظار فرمائیں, a person says تھوڑا انتظار کیجیے. Ornate Urdu is beautiful in poetry and letters but sounds distant in a reminder or a delivery message.
Vyas is asked for everyday spoken Urdu in Urdu script, read right to left, with آپ for the listener and the English words Urdu speakers use, such as order, call and appointment, written in Urdu letters. Polite forms such as کیجیے and لیجیے stay, because they are how people really speak to a customer or an elder.
Urdu verbs and adjectives change with the speaker's gender, as in Hindi: جاؤں گا for a man, جاؤں گی for a woman. So that any voice can read the result, Vyas rephrases first-person sentences, for example پہنچنے میں دس منٹ لگیں گے (it will take ten minutes to get there). To match one voice exactly, edit the translation before you play it.

How it works
Vyas, the Sonex Labs language model, turns your Arabic into everyday spoken Urdu, and is asked to write numbers and times as words so they are read naturally and to keep the speaker's gender unmarked, so any voice can read the result. The same model is available through an OpenAI-compatible API.
Pāṇini, the Sonex Labs text-to-speech model, reads the Urdu translation live in the voice you pick; nothing on this page is pre-recorded. To turn longer Urdu scripts into audio, or to hear more Urdu voices, use the Urdu text-to-speech page.
FAQ
Yes, on this page. Translate up to 220 characters of Arabic at a time and play the Urdu result, with no account; very heavy use from one connection is asked to sign up. Signing up is free and gives 10,000 text-to-speech characters and one voice clone, no card required. To build translation into your own app, Vyas costs $0.30 per million input tokens and $0.60 per million output tokens. Pāṇini costs $0.03125 per 1,000 characters, the same rate for every language.
Yes, once you sign up (free). The player on this page plays audio in the browser only. After sign-up, the API returns Urdu audio as MP3 when you set "output_format": "mp3", and the dashboard saves each clip as a WAV file.
Not yet. The translator takes typed or pasted text only, up to 220 characters at a time.
Vyas is suited to short, everyday sentences like the samples on this page, but its translation quality has not been measured on a public benchmark, and like any machine translation it can get names, idioms and tone wrong. The translation box is editable, so fix anything before you play it, and have a native Urdu speaker check anything medical, legal or financial.
There is no native Urdu platform voice yet, so the player starts with Alok, a voice recorded in another language: the Urdu text is read correctly, in that voice's accent. Any Sonex Labs voice can read Urdu and keeps its own accent. After sign-up you can also clone a voice from a 10-second recording and use it for Urdu.
