Three everyday English to Hindi translations

Most English to Hindi voice translation is short and practical: a delivery update, a clinic reminder, a message to a driver or a relative who reads Hindi more easily than English. Those sentences need the Hindi people speak, with English words like order and OTP left in, not a textbook rendering.

Your order will reach you by Friday evening.

आपका ऑर्डर शुक्रवार शाम तक पहुँच जाएगा।

Can we talk tomorrow morning? Today is a little busy.

क्या कल सुबह बात हो सकती है? आज थोड़ा काम ज़्यादा है।

Please bring your old reports when you come to the clinic.

क्लिनिक आते समय अपनी पुरानी रिपोर्ट साथ ले आइए।

Register

Formal and everyday Hindi

Hindi has two registers that sound almost like different languages. Signboards, government letters and news bulletins lean on Sanskrit words such as प्रतीक्षा, आरक्षण and दूरभाष. People on the phone say रुकिए, बुकिंग and फ़ोन, and borrow English freely for order, OTP, link and appointment.

A word-for-word translation tends to land in the formal register, which sounds stiff when it is read aloud. Vyas is asked for the everyday version instead: आप for the listener, short sentences, and the English words Hindi speakers really use, written in Devanagari so the voice says them with a Hindi accent.

Keeping the speaker's gender out of the translation

Hindi verbs change with the speaker's gender: a man says पहुँच जाऊँगा and a woman पहुँच जाऊँगी. So that any voice can read the result, Vyas rephrases first-person sentences, for example पहुँचने में दस मिनट लगेंगे (it will take ten minutes to get there). If you want the form that matches one voice, edit the translation before you play it.

How it works

Vyas translates, Pāṇini speaks the Hindi

Translation by Vyas

Vyas, the Sonex Labs language model, turns your English into everyday spoken Hindi, and is asked to write numbers and times as words so they are read naturally and to keep the speaker's gender unmarked, so any voice can read the result. The same model is available through an OpenAI-compatible API.

Speech by Pāṇini

Pāṇini, the Sonex Labs text-to-speech model, reads the Hindi translation live in the voice you pick; nothing on this page is pre-recorded. To turn longer Hindi scripts into audio, or to hear more Hindi voices, use the Hindi text-to-speech page.

FAQ

English to Hindi voice translation, answered

Yes, on this page. Translate up to 220 characters of English at a time and play the Hindi result, with no account; very heavy use from one connection is asked to sign up. Signing up is free and gives 10,000 text-to-speech characters and one voice clone, no card required. To build translation into your own app, Vyas costs $0.30 per million input tokens and $0.60 per million output tokens. Pāṇini costs $0.03125 per 1,000 characters, the same rate for every language.

Yes, once you sign up (free). The player on this page plays audio in the browser only. After sign-up, the API returns Hindi audio as MP3 when you set "output_format": "mp3", and the dashboard saves each clip as a WAV file.

Not yet. The translator takes typed or pasted text only, up to 220 characters at a time.

Vyas is suited to short, everyday sentences like the samples on this page, but its translation quality has not been measured on a public benchmark, and like any machine translation it can get names, idioms and tone wrong. The translation box is editable, so fix anything before you play it, and have a native Hindi speaker check anything medical, legal or financial.

The player offers three voices, starting with Priya, a native Hindi voice. Any Sonex Labs voice can read Hindi and keeps its own accent. After sign-up you can also clone a voice from a 10-second recording and use it for Hindi.
